The historic renovation of the 108-year-old William R. Belknap School preserves the architectural character of the former school building in Louisville’s Belknap neighborhood. The Belknap building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982 and sitting vacant for decades. This project has adapted the space for modern use as multi-family housing while honoring its educational legacy and historic significance within the community

Additional Information

“This project thoughtfully revives an historic civic building with a light touch that preserves its architectural character, spatial clarity, and the rich patina of age. The design team approached the renovation with humility and care, allowing the building’s story and spirit to remain visible while gently adapting it for contemporary use. Their respectful work exemplifies how architects can ‘first, do no harm’ when working with beloved landmarks. By repurposing a school that once educated generations into neighborhood residences, the project offers continuity of place, time, and culture. It is a gift to the community – saving an old friend and extending its life for another century. -Jury Comments
