Designed in the 1960s, the Chemistry-Physics Building long struggled with functional obsolescence and dated aesthetics. While it houses some of the most complex and demanding laboratory environments on campus, its outdated systems, inefficient layout, and unapproachable presence made it a prime candidate for demolition. Instead, this project demonstrates how thoughtful intervention can revitalize a mid-century structure, transforming it into a research facility that will serve the university for decades to come

Additional Information

“This project breathes new life into a complex building by opening it to the street and transforming its interiors into light-filled, inviting spaces that foster a vibrant learning and teaching environment. Thoughtful design choices – such as generous conspicuous entries, glass partitions, and abundant daylight – encourage community and engagement. The phased renovation, carried out while the building remained occupied, was a remarkable logistical achievement enabled by close collaboration between the university, architects, and users. This effort not only preserved embodied carbon while extending the building’s life but also exemplified sustainability at its best. The result is a fresh, forward-looking symbol of progress and purpose.” -Jury Comments
