This was one of the city’s nine Carnegie Libraries built in the early 20th century, but had been closed to the public since the 1980’s. The rehabilitation and addition returns the building to its originally intended function, with a deferential, sculptural addition that resolves accessibility and supports contemporary library services.

Additional Information

“This project thoughtfully unifies old and new through a clear floor plan that respects the original building’s elegant civic character while introducing a contemporary addition that is subordinate in form and presence. The architect’s choice to invent rather than imitate results in a design that is articulate in scale and facade, offering a promising new presence for the community. Fortunately, while the addition differs greatly from the original, it demonstrates a degree of humility and care, ensuring the historic structure remains the landmark. The renovation of the existing building is skillfully handled and deeply appreciated. -Jury Comments
