Managing risk and practicing ethically should be important objectives for every architect, every firm, every client and every project. With the rapid and sweeping changes now experienced in the construction industry, meeting both objectives can prove challenging for experienced architects as well as those just getting started in practice.  We've put together a series of four presentations that are particularly relevant in these changing times.

The first three sessions will be presented by professional liability experts from XL Insurance and The Underwriter's Group:

Session I – “Ten Commandments of Managing your Risk”

Session II - "LEED Us Not Into Temptation"

Session III - “Integrated Project Delivery and BIM: All of Our Problems Are Solved”

The final presentation focuses on the AIA Code of Ethics and is presented by national AIA's Associate General Counsel from Washington, DC:

Session IV - "Is it right? Is it wrong? Does it matter?"

Kentucky Board of Architects Requirements

The Commonwealth of Kentucky requires 12 professional development unit (PDU) hours each renewal period, which runs from July 1 to June 30. Eight of the 12 PDU hours must relate to health, safety, and/or welfare (HSW) topics. The Board DOES NOT pre-approve education programs for credit. It is the responsibility of the architect to make appropriate judgments about whether the quality and applicability of the programs submitted to the Board for credit meet the state requirements. Complete information about the Kentucky requirement for license renewal is available at www.kybera.com .

AIA Requirements

All active AIA members must successfully complete 18 learning unit (LU) hours each year, with at least 8 of the 18 LU hours relating to health, safety, and/or welfare (HSW).

  • A member who fails to meet the annual requirement will be given a one-year grace period. Any credit earned in the following year will apply toward the deficit. During the first nine months of the grace period, members are able to report retroactively any activities that were completed in the previous year.
  • A member who exceeds the annual requirement may carry up to 18 LU hours (including eight hours of HSW) over to the next year. Carryover credit can be used for one year only; it is not cumulative. Only the number of credits needed to fulfill the annual requirement for the following year may be carried over. Extra credit may not be carried past the one-year limit.

NOTE: Most state licensing boards do not allow carryover and deficit credit. States have strict continuing education timeframes, and credits must be earned within them.

AIA eClassroom Courses Available

eClassroom course content is generated by digitally taping lectures and synchronizing them with graphics. The multimedia lectures are supplemented with links to additional resources, and handouts. After completing the course, users answer 10-15 questions related to the program content. Assuming the questions are answered correctly, AIA members and nonmembers may print a certificate from the quiz page upon course completion. Learning units are reported for AIA members to the University of Oklahoma record-keeping body in batches, once a week.

eClassroom support hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM, EST via email at eclassroom@aia.org or call Information Central at (800) 242-3837.
