AIA150 - Celebrating the Past, Designing the Future

Kentucky Chapters Receive AIA150 Blueprint for America Grants:

The three local AIA chapters in Kentucky have received Blueprint for America grant funding from the AIA for their AIA150 projects supporting local community initiatives. The Blueprint for America is a nationwide community service program of AIA150, a yearlong observance in 2007 that will mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the AIA. The Blueprint program was created to offer citizens in communities across America an opportunity to celebrate their community heritage, address emerging architectural challenges and trends, and find their voices to help make their vision real for beautiful, safe, and livable communities.

Here's a quick summary of each chapter's program:

The Central Kentucky Chapter's "Louisville's Portland Neighborhood: Livability, Sustainability, Viability by Design" received a $15,000 grant. Members of CKC will provide design support to the working-class residents of the Portland neighborhood to assist their visualization of their neighborhood development plan that will strengthen the livability of their community without altering its socio-economic character.
AIA150 Champion: Steve Wiser, AIA - wiser@jraarchitects.com

The East Kentucky Chapter's "A Living Picture for Lexington, Kentucky and the Bluegrass Region: 2010 and Beyond" received a $10,000 grant. The program will involve community-wide discussion and input to develop a strategic plan for 2010 that not only prepares the city to host the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games but also ensures that the quality of life of the entire community is enhanced in the process. The AIA's 10 Principals of Livable Cities, graphic elements and a media campaign will all be important tools used to expand public awareness and conversation.

AIA 150 Champion: Ken Donnelly, AIA - kdonnelly@brandstettercarroll.com

The Northern Kentucky Chapter's "Pit to Park: The Introduction of Sustainability in Land Reclamation" received a $10,000 grant. The project involves reuse of a forty-five acre former Ellis Mine gravel pit in Boone County Kentucky for a passive recreation. Through this initiative NKC members will promote discussion and debates among the community for more future parks, their location and better access to the general public in the fastest growing County in Kentucky.

AIA 150 Champion: Kim Patton, AIA - kpatton@gbbn.com / Barlage Barlage, AIA – bbarlage@gbbn.com

Each initiative has lots of opportunities - and a great need - for involvement and assistance from chapter members. Please contact any of the local champions if you want to help your community and get involved!
